Chad M. Nelson, CFA
Managing Partner and Portfolio Manager
Mr. Nelson’s career commenced in 1995 with Lazard London Asset Management in the United Kingdom where he worked for two years as an analyst reporting directly to the Chief Investment Officer of Global Securities. He then transferred to the New York office of Lazard Frères Asset Management where he was responsible for small cap and micro cap research analysis. In 1999, Chad joined the institutional boutique firm of Thomson Horstmann & Bryant, Inc. (THB) where he spent two years as a research analyst prior to his elevation to Director of Research and Portfolio Manager of a pioneer strategy, Micro Cap active management.
While at the helm of the micro cap portfolio for more than 15 years, the product grew from $30 million to approximately $1 billion with clients including nationally recognized public, corporate, and E&F plan sponsors. Chad led a management buyout of the firm from its parent, Old Mutual Asset Management, in 2010. In addition, THB managed institutional small cap portfolio assets for which he served as portfolio manager. He also co-managed the THB MICROCAP Fund, a 1940 Act Fund, sponsored by SEI, Inc.
Chad is the Managing Partner of the GP. Before constructing this Partnership, he elected to sell his 42.5% interest in THB to pursue his ambition to create Invenire Capital, LLC and to offer and manage Invenire Partners, LP. He has a significant amount of his liquid personal net worth invested in the portfolio of the LP.
Chad received his Master of Business Administration from the University of Missouri-Kansas City in 1994 after graduating Summa Cum Laude from Northwest Missouri State University with a Bachelor of Science in Finance and a minor in Economics. He is a Chartered Financial Analyst® (CFA) and a member of the New York Society of Securities Analysts.
Matt Johnson, CFA, CPA
Senior Investment Analyst
Mr. Johnson’s career began with Bill Gates Investments (BGI) in Kirkland, Washington. BGI is the manager of Cascade Investment (the Gates family investment vehicle) and the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation Trust. From 2007 to 2012, Matt served in various capacities as an Investment Analyst of both private and public equities, debt instruments, and real estate. His responsibilities included trading equities, equity derivatives, fixed income securities, commodity futures, and currencies.
He returned to his original home of greater Kansas City after five years in the Seattle area and accepted a position with Kornitzer Capital Management, the manager of the Buffalo funds, a $8 billion family of ten 1940 Act mutual funds and an additional $3 billion of RIA separately managed accounts. He served as an Investment Analyst until 2014, with a bottom-up research process and a generalist industry focus.
Prior to accepting a position with Invenire Capital, LLC, Matt was Director of Research and Investment Analyst for Whetstone Capital Advisors, a Kansas City-based manager of a $150 million limited partnership that has a long/short concentrated strategy, targeting 15-20 long positions and 10-15 short positions.
Matt earned both his Bachelor of Science in Finance and Accounting in 2005 with Highest Distinction and Master of Accounting and Information Systems in 2007 from the University of Kansas. He is a Chartered Financial Analyst® (CFA) and a Certified Public Accountant (CPA).
William C. Horton
Director of Operations
Mr. Horton has over thirty years of experience in the asset management and investment brokerage industry. Bill began his career with Merrill Lynch in 1985 and over the course of the following decade held various roles, including management positions with Drexel Burnham Lambert and Paine Webber. For the last twenty years, he has held various positions in the institutional asset management channel, including J. Stephan & Company, where he was a Principal and instrumental in the development phase of multiple nascent boutique asset management firms. He also led a regional business development initiative for American Century Investments, as a Vice President and Director of Institutional Business Development.
Bill received his Bachelor of Science in Finance from the University of Maryland and has a Master of Arts in Marketing.
